kals - An avalanche has certainly claimed a life in Austria. A second man is still being sought and a search for possible missing persons is also being carried out at another location in the mountains.

According to the Tyrolean Tageszeitung, two German men of 25 were buried in the snow on Friday afternoon when they went skiing outside the piste near Kals. Only two hours later saw two casual passers-by that there had been an avalanche. They alerted the emergency services that one of the Bavarian boys found. The other person is still being sought.

Also at the town of Kühtai an avalanche crashed on Friday. Two people were partially buried, but could be dug without injuries. Mountain riders are still looking for possible other missing persons. It is not clear whether the avalanche, which partly flogged a piste, surprised more people.

After an immense pack of snow fell in the Alps on Wednesday, the temperature started to rise on Thursday. This combination creates a life-threatening avalanche risk. Winter sports enthusiasts are advised not to go into the mountains in some cases and certainly not leave the slopes.

The ANWB estimates that there are currently hundreds of thousands of Dutch people on a winter sports holiday.
