wharton beach, west australia - A 37-year-old surfer dies in Australia after a fatal shark attack. Witnessed by girlfriend, search for body halted.

Tragic Shark Attack in Australia

A 37-year-old surfer, Jeffrey Payne, was attacked by a gigantic shark while surfing in Wharton Beach, West Australia. Witnesses described a scene of panic as the shark attacked Payne in chest-deep water, just 30 meters from the shore.

The emergency services arrived promptly but were unable to save Payne, whose body has not yet been recovered. His surfboard, bearing bite marks, was retrieved from the water. The police spokesperson mentioned the traumatic experience for Payne's girlfriend and the documentation of the incident by a drone camera.

Payne and his girlfriend were on a six-month trip through Australia when the tragic incident occurred during their fifth week.

Due to the slim chances of finding Payne's body, the search operation has been called off. The beach is expected to reopen soon as there are no signs of the shark in the area. Fatal shark attacks have been reported in the region since 2017.
