canberra - The Australian parliament has approved a ban on young people using social media, with the Senate joining the House of Representatives in backing the proposal. The measure is being hailed as a global first.

The legislation states that individuals under the age of 16 will no longer be allowed to use social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. Social media companies face fines if they fail to take adequate measures to prevent minors from accessing their platforms. Young people and their parents themselves will not be penalized for non-compliance with the rules.

The ban will not take immediate effect. There will be a year-long period for implementation. Some members of the Australian opposition supported the measures, but there was also criticism. Critics in parliament argue that the ban is being rushed and that it remains unclear how it will be enforced. Proponents see the ban as a way to protect children's well-being.

During a public hearing, experts had differing opinions. A clinical psychologist stated that, as far as is known, the use of social media does not bring any health benefits to young people. Other experts did see positive aspects, such as for minors living in remote areas who can seek help or connect through these platforms.
