maputo - At least 76 people have been confirmed dead on the island of Mozambique after the passage of cyclone Chido, which also caused considerable damage on the French island of Mayotte.

At least 76 people have been confirmed dead on the island of Mozambique after the passage of cyclone Chido, which also caused considerable damage on the French island of Mayotte.

The cyclone caused extensive damage last Sunday. Nearly 62,000 homes in Mozambique are reported to have been completely destroyed. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated on Friday that the local population is in need of shelter, food, hygiene kits, and mosquito nets. The European Union announced on Friday that they are sending material and financial assistance to Mozambique and Mayotte.

On the French island, 35 people have died and approximately 2,500 people have been injured due to Chido. French President Emmanuel Macron, during his visit to the island on Thursday, stated that there may be many more victims to mourn.
