quito - After five years of bivouacing at the embassy of Ecuador in London, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange received a citizen service number from the South American country. Since Wednesday he is in the Ecuadorian population register with the number 1729926483. But whether he also got the nationality of the country is unclear. As well as what this means for the extradition issue.

The government in Quito does not want to confirm whether Assange has acquired citizenship. On Twitter, Assange placed a picture of himself in an Ecuadorian football shirt, reinforcing the rumors.

Normally nationalized foreigners in Ecuador get a number that starts with 30. Assanges number starts with 17, which is reserved for Ecuadorians born in the province of Pichincha.

The born Australian fled into the embassy in 2012 to prevent him from being extradited to Sweden and the US. The Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs, MarĂa Fernanda Espinosa, had asked for international help on Tuesday, because the guarding of the embassy was expensive.
