damascus - A convoy of relief goods is trying to reach the Syrian rebel city of Douma in East Ghouta on Thursday. Thousands of displaced families have sought a safe haven in that city, according to local authorities. Refugees are forced to sleep on the street.

The convoy of relief supplies consists of about 25 trucks, said Ziad Msallati, an advisor to the Syrian Red Crescent aid organization. High UN adviser Jan Egeland confirmed that the Syrian authorities have given permission to send a convoy on Thursday.

Egeland emphasized that nothing is certain until the goods have actually been unloaded. A previous convoy would have been deprived of medical supplies by order of the Syrian authorities. They obviously wanted to prevent these goods from falling into the hands of rebels.

The local authorities, controlled by the opposition, had alarmed Monday about the humanitarian situation in the city. Certainly seventy bodies would have been forced to be buried in a city park because it was too unsafe to go to the cemetery because of air strikes.
