- IFAB approves significant rule changes for football, including expanded VAR role and new time limits, sparking debate on impact for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

Evaluating New Rule Changes for 2026 World Cup

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has introduced major rule modifications set to debut at the 2026 World Cup, raising questions about the efficacy of these changes, particularly the expanded Video Assistant Referee (VAR) powers.

VAR Enhancements and Rule Adjustments

The new rules include VAR checks for corners and extending the VAR protocol to cover second yellow cards and cards awarded to the wrong team. Additionally, measures to counter disruptive tactics have been approved.

Expert Opinions on Rule Changes

Former referee Andy Davies supports the introduction of a five-second countdown for throw-ins and goal kicks, citing the positive impact of similar previous rules. The ten-second time limit for substituted players leaving the pitch is also viewed favorably as it streamlines match flow.

However, concerns arise regarding the extended one-minute rule for injured players leaving the pitch, potentially affecting game outcomes. On the contrary, the exemption of injured players treated after a foul from leaving the pitch is seen as a positive change.

VAR's Increased Authority

The IFAB's decision to grant VAR more power, allowing intervention in cases of clearly incorrect second yellow cards and mistaken identity, has been well received for its potential to rectify significant errors.

Debating VAR's Role in Awarding Corner Kicks

While the VAR's new authority to assist in incorrectly awarded corner kicks aims to ensure fair play, concerns about time delays and potential game interference have been raised. The Premier League and FA have the option to opt out of this rule change.

With these changes set to impact the upcoming World Cup, the football community awaits to observe their effects on the sport's grandest stage.
