wisconsin, eastern europe - An American kayaker who was believed to have tragically died after going missing during a kayak trip in Wisconsin has reappeared, revealing that he staged his own death to escape his family.

An American kayaker, Ryan Borgwardt, who was presumed dead after disappearing during a kayak trip, has resurfaced in a video message from somewhere in Eastern Europe, three months after his disappearance. Authorities suspected that Borgwardt faked his own death to start a new life away from his family.

After not returning from a kayaking trip on August 11, Borgwardt's car was found parked, along with his capsized kayak floating on the water. Search efforts yielded no results, leaving his family and authorities puzzled.

Sheriff Mark Podoll confirmed that Borgwardt was alive and well, but had chosen not to return home yet, possibly residing in Eastern Europe. Borgwardt revealed how he staged his disappearance, paddling to the shore in a small boat, retrieving an e-bike, and traveling to a yet undisclosed location.

Authorities are still investigating Borgwardt's motives for leaving his family abruptly, with no criminal charges currently filed against him. However, he is required to reimburse €38,000 for the search costs incurred.
