Russia warned last month that it would return if the Canadians would take such measures. Similar legislation in the US, the so-called Magnitsky Act, has been a pillar in the relationship between Washington and Moscow for years.
Magnitski died in 2009 under suspicious circumstances when he was in front of Russia. He was arrested after having accused Russian tax officials of millions of fraud. The Russian embassy in Ottowa has not responded to the new punishment measure.
