vienna - The Syrian government and the opposition reached an agreement on an armistice in East Ghouta during the negotiations in Vienna on Friday. It has been agreed that from midnight no more will be shot and bombed in this rebel stronghold near the capital Damascus. That is what spokesperson Ahmed Ramadan said of the insurgents. The file is mainly due to Russian mediation.

The East-Ghouta region has been bombarded for four years by the troops of President Bashar al-Assad. An estimated 400,000 people are largely cut off from humanitarian aid. According to information from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the rebels insisted that relief supplies be brought to the besieged area within 48 hours, otherwise the appointment will lapse.
