brussels - The member states of the European Union should recognize Palestine as a state, with Jerusalem as its capital. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas made this call in Brussels prior to a working lunch with the 28 EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs.

Recognition would keep the hope of the Palestinian people alive for peace, said Abbas, who considers the EU as 'the most important international partner and true friend'. The president said 'determined' to reunite Gaza and Westbank under central Palestinian government, with Jerusalem as its capital.

Abbas promised to continue to fight against terrorism. He said that the Palestinians will abide by the treaties with Israel and called on Tel Aviv to do the same.

EU foreign chef Federica Mogherini reiterated the European position: a two-state solution with Jerusalem as the capital of both countries. Ministers made that clear last month to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was then visiting.
