portugal - Portuguese and British police intercepted a submarine with 600 million euros worth of cocaine onboard, revealing drug lords' extensive use of submarines for smuggling.

Drug Submarine Seized with Massive Cocaine Haul

Portuguese and British authorities confiscated a submarine carrying 6,500 kilograms of drugs destined for Europe. The vessel, originating from Brazil, was intercepted 500 nautical miles from the Azores. The crew members from Brazil, Colombia, and Spain were arrested and taken to Sao Miguel, Portugal.

This incident marks one of the largest drug submarines ever intercepted, with smugglers planning to approach the Portuguese coast and transport the cocaine ashore using speedboats.

Drug lords employ submarines to evade customs detection, as they are difficult to spot from the air. If caught, the crew sinks the submarine to conceal evidence of drug smuggling. Reports suggest that drug lords possess a fleet of 'hundreds' of self-built submarines for smuggling purposes.

In a rare success, the discovery of a submarine carrying 3.3 tons of cocaine off the coast of Spain in 2019 was hailed as the first 'narco-submarine' interception in Europe.
