30 years demanded against ex-president South Korea

World February 27, 2018 08:33

seoul - In the trial of former South Korean president Park Geun-hye, prosecutors demanded 30 years' imprisonment for corruption on Tuesday. Park would also have to pay a fine of 90 million euros.

Park was deposed in March last year as a result of a corruption scandal. She was president for four years. She is accused of bribery, abuse of power and the leak of state secrets. Park claims to be innocent.

The persecution of the 66-year-old Park coincides with that of her former confidant Choi Soon-sil. This cardinal friend of Park would have scrambled nearly 60 million euros from big South Korean companies and cashed in her good relationship with Park. Prosecutors state that Park consciously cooperated and thus made the presidency a private, profitable business.

Choi was sentenced to cell jail earlier this month and has appealed, reported news agency Yonhap.
