Legal Challenge Against Trump's Executive Order

18 Democratic states attorneys general have filed a lawsuit against President Trump's executive order which eliminates the automatic citizenship provision for children born in the US. The lawsuit argues that the President does not have the authority to alter a long-standing constitutional principle.

The lawsuit highlights that around 150,000 children born to non-citizen parents in the US each year would be deprived of essential services and federal funds due to this executive order.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin stated that Trump's attempt to unilaterally end birthright citizenship is a clear violation of the Constitution and emphasized that presidents in the country have broad powers but are not kings. He highlighted the long-standing rule in the US that babies born in the country are American citizens, calling the executive order an attack on the essence of the nation.

The executive order, signed by Trump in the Oval Office on the night of his inauguration, was challenged in court by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) following his oath-taking ceremony.
