1.6 billion for Spain for oil spill Prestige

la coruña - A court in the Spanish region of Galicia has allocated Spain a compensation of almost 1.6 billion euros for the damage caused by the sinking of the Prestige tanker in 2002. Galicia receives 1.8 million euros and France 61 million euros, according to the Spanish press office Europa Press Wednesday.

Municipal councils, individuals and other parties also have the right to compensation. The then Greek captain of the ship and the insurer London P \u0026 I Club must put together $ 1 billion (nearly 850 million euros) to pay compensation. The remaining amount must come from Mare Shipping, owner of the Prestige, and from an international fund that benefits compensation to the deceased by oil pollution.

The ankle-walled tanker Prestige came into trouble during a storm on the coast of Galicia fifteen years ago. The ship broke halfway in November 2002 and lost an estimated 77 million liters of oil. It was the biggest environmental battle in Spain ever. About 1700 kilometers of coast, from Portugal to France, was severely polluted by the oil.
