washington - Incoming President Donald Trump has asked the US Supreme Court to delay the deadline for a potential ban on TikTok, according to political news site The Hill.

The United States has passed a law giving the Chinese parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, until January 19 to sell its American operations, or face a ban on the popular video app. The US Supreme Court still needs to rule on this law.

During his election campaign, Republican Trump objected to the law and promised to 'save' TikTok. He also heavily used the video app to reach young voters during his campaign.

Many American politicians view TikTok, with around 170 million American users, as a national security threat because the app is in Chinese hands.
