washington - A 38-year-old man from Latvia has been sentenced to fourteen years in prison in the United States. Ruslans Bondars ran a site between 2009 and 2016 where hackers could test their malware.

On the site Scan4you hackers could try out against payment if their malicious programs were able to bypass antivirus software. Bondars had thousands of customers. One of them managed to steal approximately 40 million credit card data through retail chains in the United States after the test. One of the affected companies suffered nearly $ 300 million in damages. Another hacker used the test site to develop a malware that infected eleven million computers and caused half a billion dollars of damage. The total damage by Scan4you according to the court amounted to 20.5 billion dollars.

The judge later decides whether Bondars must pay compensation.
