Zikavirus in pregnant women in Colombia

More than 3100 pregnant Colombian women are infected with zikavirus transmitted by mosquitoes.

The virus is responsible for malformations in newborns. There is no vaccine or treatment against yet. According to Santos, there are no known cases of the brain disorder microcephaly in Colombia in babies. The skull is too small so that the brains do not develop properly and the child may be handicapped.

In total there are in Colombia 25 645 people infected with the disease, Santos said during a TV broadcast. The zikavirus spreads rapidly around the South and Central Americas.

The World Health Organization (WHO), the outbreak of the zikavirus last week billed as a global public health emergency.
