Venezuela calls economic state of emergency

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Friday declared the economic emergency for a period of sixty days.

The move, according to observers, not only because of the miserable state of the economy of the oil-rich South American country, but also a political weapon from Maduro. His left-wing PSUV party suffered a humiliating defeat in parliamentary elections on 6 December. Thereby lost the leftist forces that have kept their grip since 1999, the majority in parliament.
The center-right majority in the new parliament that took office in January, announced that Maduro's government should look away mid-year.
