US passes levies on EU steel

The United States is going to announce import duties on steel and aluminum for the European Union, reports The Wall Street Journal on the basis of imported sources.

President Donald Trump introduced import tariffs of 25 percent on steel in March and 10 percent on aluminum. This led, among other things, to a trade dispute with China. Allies Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Argentina and the EU were temporarily excluded from the levies.

In early May, Trump gave the EU a further one month delay for import duties. In the meantime, the EU tried to get the US plan out of the table. That now seems to have had no result.

The EU announced earlier to strike back when the charges go into effect. For steel and aluminum, the same rates will count as the US. In addition, there are new rates on typical American products such as jeans, Harley Davidson engines and peanut butter.
