UNHCR demands solution for passengers Diciotti

The UN refugee organization wants EU countries to make reception places available for around 150 rescued people on board an Italian coastguard ship.

The Coast Guard ship Diciotti saved the migrants earlier this month at sea. The ship is now already days in the port of Catania, where the adult crew must stay on board. Italy wants other Member States of the European Union to include migrants.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, now demands that European countries take responsibility for those on board. He states in a statement that an end should be put to the bickering between countries about 'who has to take the least responsibility for people who have been rescued at sea. '
