UN: let the Syria situation not get out of hand

The Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres called on the members of the UN Security Council not to let the situation in Syria get out of hand.

Guterres reminded the ambassadors of Russia, China, France, Great Britain and the United States that it was about ending the 'terrible suffering of the Syrian population.' The Security Council had not agreed one day before research to find out whether chemical weapons have been reused in the Syrian city of Douma and which team of specialists to investigate.

The US with Western allies and Russia were diametrically opposed. Proposals from both the Americans and the Russians met with a veto.
