UN act against human traffickers in Libya

The United Nations is going to impose punitive measures against human traffickers in Libya.

The sanctions were proposed by the Netherlands. The Cabinet wants to combat human trafficking and smuggling from Libya, 'improve the lives of refugees and migrants in Libya and prevent the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean,' says Minister Stef Blok of Foreign Affairs.

This is the first time that the Security Council has been acting against the leaders of violent human smuggling gangs. All fifteen members agreed. Libya would like to add more names to the sanction list. The Netherlands wants to investigate whether that is possible.
