Turkish professor condemned but released

A Turkish court has sentenced a professor, who had gone on hunger strike to get her job back, sentenced to six years and three months in prison, because she would be a member of the forbidden group DHKP-C.

The 35-year-old Nuriye Gülmen, who lost her job on suspicion of involvement in the failed coup d'état last July, was released in anticipation of her appeal. She had already been transferred to a hospital in advance of her trial, because of her deteriorated state by the seven-month hunger strike.

Another teacher who had gone on hunger strike, the primary school teacher Semih Özakca, was acquitted of the same charge. A third suspect was also acquitted Friday of a less heavy charge of participation in illegal demonstrations.
