Taliban kill Afghan governor

The Taliban killed the governor of a district in the Afghan province of Ghazni.

The insurgents attacked police checkpoints and the governor's building at night. Gov. Ali Dost Shams was killed. At least seven policemen would also have been killed. 'After the attack, the troops asked for air support. 27 Taliban fighters have been killed by the bombing and during the fighting, 'reports the police.

A senior police official told the Reuters news agency that the governor's bodyguards and five intelligence officers were also killed. The Taliban say they have taken the district, but local police officials contradict it. The rebels claim to have killed a total of twenty police officers.
