Super Parasite threatens malaria fight

Super parasites that are resistant to multiple malarial drugs have emerged in parts of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

Super parasites are malaria parasites that are resistant to current best treatments for the disease, artemisinin and piperaquine. The parasites are widespread in Cambodia and even more resistant parasite is active in southern Laos and northeastern Thailand.

'We lose a dangerous race to eliminate artemisinin-resistant parasites. The consequences of the spread of resistant malaria parasites deeper into India and Africa can be serious if we do not take quick action from a global world health situation, 'says a professor from Oxford University and Mahidol in Thailand who has researched the super parasites.
