State New York tightens up arms rules

Convicts of domestic violence must surrender all their firearms in the American state of New York.

'New York is once again leading the way in the prevention of gun violence with this reform based on common sense,' says Cuomo. 'There is a clear link between firearm violence and domestic violence. This law does something about that. '

After the shooting at Sandy Hook primary school in 2012, in which 26 people were killed, convicts of domestic violence were already forced to hand in all their weapons. These rules are now being tightened up and, moreover, the law ensures that someone who has been convicted of certain crimes can not obtain or renew a license for a weapon.

In 2016, 35 homicide cases were used by domestic firearms in the state of New York.
