South Ossetia wants to be just like Crimean referendum

Following the example of Crimea wants the breakaway Georgian republic of South Ossetia hold a referendum on joining Russia.

" Given the political reality of today , we have to make a historic choice and be united with Russia ", said Tibilov according to a statement from his office Tuesday.

Tibilov said that the connection is required for the security of South Ossetia. South Ossetia in 2008 was the battleground of a bloody war between Georgian and Russian forces in which hundreds of people died. The South Ossetian authorities declared the territory an independent state, but that is only recognized by Russia and some other countries.

Russia incorporated the Crimea in March 2014 after a military raid and a controversial referendum. Before that the Crimea was part of Ukraine.
