Serbian grass can cost Bulgarian cow life

A Bulgarian cow has caused a lot of commotion by wandering to a probably greener meadow with the neighbors in Serbia.

Penka had strayed from the herd in the southwest of Bulgaria in the middle of last month and landed across the border in the Serbian meadow, without the owner noticing it. The animal returned, but wrote its own death warrant: according to European rules, an animal that has been outside the EU can no longer be traced back.

Many Bulgarians are indignant that Penka comes to an end because of such a rule. 'We will see if an exception can be made', the Minister of Agriculture promised. Internationally, animal lovers and politicians are now trying to save Penka from slaughter.
