Senate Argentina blocks abortion proposal

The Argentine Senate voted against a proposal that made abortion possible under other circumstances.

The proposal had legalized the termination of the pregnancy up to and including the fourteenth week. The lower house of the Argentinian parliament had already given the green light, but the Senate finally rejected the proposal with 38 to 31 votes.

Abortion is currently only allowed if the pregnancy is the result of rape or if the life of the mother is at risk.

Some proponents can not be blamed. 'I am still optimistic. The law is not approved today, but that will happen tomorrow or the next day ', says a 23-year-old woman. 'This is not over yet. '
