Russia and China block Syria resolution

Russia and China have blocked a resolution of the UN Security Council on Syria.

Russia's UN envoy last week had already announced that it will use its veto, for the seventh time on the Syrian conflict. The reason he gave for this resolution, initiated by France and Britain, the peace talks between the warring Syrian parties would harm in Geneva. China blindly followed.

Nine members of the Security Council supported the resolution. Without a veto by one of the five major powers that would have been enough. Bolivia did not agree with the text, Ethiopia, Egypt and Kazakhstan abstained.
