Royal last honor for Kofi Annan

Princess Beatrix and Princess Mabel attended Thursday the funeral ceremony of former Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Kofi Annan.

The ceremony at the Accra International Conference Center was attended by 6000 interested parties. Outside the conference center, the service was followed by thousands of Ghanaians via large screens. Most of the inhabitants of Accra wore black clothing as a token of respect for their compatriot. After the ceremony Annan was buried in private on the military cemetery Buma Camp.

Annan had close ties with the royal family and worked closely with Princess Mabel in the organization of 'wise former statesmen' The Elders, set up by Nelson Mandela.
