Puigdemont pushes forward the intended successor

The Catalan former prime minister Carles Puigdemont has put forward a candidate to lead a new regional management.

The Spanish region is without prime minister since Puigdemont went into exile after the illegal referendum on independence. Regional elections have been held since then. Catalan politicians have to appoint a prime minister before 22 May to prevent new elections.

The regional parliament recently adopted a proposal that would make it possible to reinstate Puigdemont. He no longer needed to be physically present to be elected prime minister. That was against the sore leg of the Spanish government, which went to the constitutional court.

'We have appealed against a law that is meant to sanction someone who flees justice and lives abroad,' said Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. The court dealt with the case on Wednesday. The law can not be used until a judgment has been made. That can take months.
