Prime Minister Iraq congratulates al-Sadr with victory

The Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi congratulated the Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on his election victory.

Although the final election results are not yet known, preliminary results indicate that al-Sadr's party is heading for a victory. He made a spearhead of the fight against corruption in the run-up to the elections and made an alliance with the Communists.

The 44-year-old clergyman is not undisputed. After the fall of dictator Saddam Hussein, the Mahdi Army of al-Sadr fought the Americans by force. In recent years he was considered an outspoken critic of the establishment in Baghdad.
