President Al-Sisi sworn in for second term

The Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was sworn in for a second term in the Egyptian parliament on Saturday.

The 63-year-old former head of the intelligence service and the former minister of defense was considered the winner of the election because all serious challengers had dropped out. The president's rivals were either detained or intimidated. The only remaining counter-candidate, Moussa Mustafa Moussa, was himself a supporter of Sisi. He eventually got about 3 percent of the votes.

Former army leader Sisi had put aside the democratically elected president Mohamed Mursi in 2013. That happened after mass protests against his government.
