Pakistan releases infamous Islamist

The Pakistani Islamist Hafiz Saeed, on whose head the US has made a 10 million dollar reward, can move freely in the country again.

The policemen who guarded him in Lahore left Friday morning.

Saeed is the co-founder of the terrorist movement Lashkar-e Taiba. This is among other things held responsible for the massacre in the Indian metropolis Mumbai in 2008. Ten heavily armed gunmen sowed death and destruction in two luxury hotels, a Jewish center and a train station.

Saeed denied any involvement and walked around for years, but got house arrest in January. He is leader of the charity Jamaat-ud-Dawa. According to the US, JuD is a voluntary organization for Lashkar-e-Taiba, which has been officially banned in Pakistan since 2002.
