New heat record for mainland Antarctica

The mainland of Antarctica is 17.

The record was measured at March 24, 2015 in the Argentine research station Esperanza, near the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The previous record was 15 degrees Celsius, measured on January 15, 1974 at Vanda Station.

It is not unusual that it takes years before the exact temperature is disclosed. The meteorological data from weather stations must be checked carefully.

The heat record for the entire Antarctic is 19.8 degrees Celsius, measured on the small island Signy in January 1982. The Antarctic area covers all land and ice south of 60 degrees south latitude. Signy belongs to the South Orkney Islands.
