N Korea says it wants to reduce US nuclear weapons

North Korea has directly told the United States for the first time that it is prepared to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

US and North Korean officials have recently had secret contacts, where Pyongyang has expressed the message of his willingness to hold the top, the official told Reuters news agency, on condition of anonymity. Up to now, Washington had relied on the insurance of Kims intentions through South Korea.

Questions remain about how North Korea would define denuclearization, which is seen by Washington as the abolition of Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.

North Korea has said over the years that it might consider abandoning its nuclear arsenal if the United States removes their troops from South Korea and withdraws the so-called nuclear umbrella of deterrence from South Korea and Japan.
