Moscow chooses new mayor

More than seven million Muscovites are allowed to go to the polls on Sunday to choose a new mayor.

In many regions new governors can also be appointed and in some local parliaments as well. Experts assume that the turnout will be low, especially in Moscow with its twelve million inhabitants.

However, the social situation in Russia is currently tense. The proposed pension reform has brought tens of thousands of demonstrators for weeks on end. Kremlin critic number 1 Alexej Navalni, who in vain took it against Sobjanin in 2013, has also called for a protest on election day. The opposition leader himself is missing because he is stuck because of organizing a previous banned demonstration.
