Millions sign petition against Brexit

An online petition addressed to the British government asking to stay with the European Union has been signed more than three million times in less than three days.

In theory, the government can let the EU know that on closer inspection the country will remain a member. This does not require the consent of third parties. But in a referendum on EU membership, a majority of Britons voted for Brexit in 2016. Most British MPs, including proponents of membership, do not care about the outcome of the referendum.
