Mijatovic becomes a new human rights chief

Dunja Mijatovic from Bosnia and Herzegovina is the new human rights commissioner of the Council of Europe.

Mijatovic follows the Let Nils Muiznieks on 1 April, which in 2012 preferred Frans Timmermans. The Bosnian worked previously at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) as a representative for freedom of the media.

The Commissioner for Human Rights will act if human rights are threatened in the 47 countries that are members of the Council of Europe. The organization, which is separate from the EU, is best known by the European Court of Human Rights.
