Mali attack death toll rises

The death toll from the attack in northern Mali on an army camp in the town of Gao has risen to at least sixty.

Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the North African branch of al-Qaida, has claimed responsibility for the attack. Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres spoke Wednesday of a scandalous act, to support the deployment of the UN to Mali in its fight against terrorism and for peace, strengthened further.

The attack, the worst in Mali in recent years, took place near Camp Castor where Dutch troops are stationed. They are part of the UN peacekeeping mission in the country. According to a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defense there are no Dutch among the victims.
