Lula leaves deadline expired

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has passed the deadline to report to the Brazilian police.

He withdrew with a number of supporters in the headquarters of the metalworkers' union in São Bernardo do Campo. In this suburb of São Paulo, a helicopter was ready to take Lula to a prison in Curitiba.

Earlier in the day, the court of appeal also rejected Lula's last request to remain at liberty until a judgment was rendered on appeal. The federal judge ordered him to surrender at 17.00 hours local time at the latest by Friday to serve a 12-year sentence.

Lula, who wants to take part in the elections again in October, has been convicted of accepting bribes.
