Lula is in prison but is still candidate president

Former Brazilian President Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (72) has again been nominated by the Labor Party for the party during the presidential election.

The left Lula got twelve years in prison because of a corruption case called the triflex case. He accepted a gift from a construction company, an apartment on the coast of the state of São Paulo. The costly flat was actually a bribe from the company in exchange for government assignments.

Lula served as president from 2003 to 2010. In those years he conducted a costly social policy that removed many Brazilians from poverty. He is therefore still popular and according to the polls the elections would easily win again.

The application must now be officially submitted to the election authorities before 15 August. It is expected that a judge will ban the candidacy. If it is up to Lula himself, he will take part in the presidential elections to be held in October.
