The civil war in neighboring Syria has further intensified tensions in the Middle East between Sunnis and Shiites. Shiite Iran participates together with Shiite Lebanese in the fight against radial Sunnis in Syria, who, with the support of the Gulf States, fight against President Assad, who belongs to a religious minority. The population of small Lebanon is divided and exists alongside Shiite Muslims and Sunni Muslims from numerous Christians.
