Latvian government coalition loses majority

In the Latvian parliamentary elections, the center-right coalition lost its majority.

The government partners also lost. The National Conservative National Alliance and Liberal-Conservative New Unity were 11.03 and 6.67 per cent respectively. The pro-Russian opposition party Harmonie, supported by ethnic Russians, which make up a quarter of the population, has again become the largest with almost 20 percent of the votes (24 seats).

It is unlikely that President Raimonds Vejonis will instruct the leader of Harmonie to form a new cabinet in Latvia, which is a member of the EU and NATO. He probably arrives at the real winners, to which dissatisfied Latvian voters have defected. These are the three newcomers on the right: the populist KPV LV (14.1 percent), the New Conservative Party (13.6) and the liberal Party for Development / Former (12.04).
