King Swaziland gives the country new name

The prince of Swaziland gives his kingdom a new name.

The king announced the name change during the festivities around the fiftieth anniversary of the independence of his country. He said during a speech in the city of Manzini that Swaziland, a former British colony, gets back its old name. 'I want to announce that our country will be known as the eSwatini Kingdom from today,' Mswati III proclaimed.

The name change also has a practical reason according to the monarch. He said that the name Swaziland caused confusion. 'When we go abroad, people refer to us as Switzerland,' said the king, who, dressed in an army uniform, entered the stadium in an open car. He emphasized that the country must have a name that residents can identify with.
