Kenya expels protest against closing TV

The Kenyan police used tear gas on Monday to disperse a crowd of demonstrators who demanded that three closed TV channels go up again.

The activists tried to march to government offices in central Nairobi when the police used tear gas, a witness said. The government ignored a court ruling Thursday that the stations may broadcast again. They were closed when they tried to broadcast live images of the symbolic presidential inauguration of opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Odinga claims that he, and not President Uhuru Kenyatta, is the real winner of the presidential election that was held in August, but was later destroyed by the Supreme Court on procedural grounds. Kenyatta won the August election and the re-election in October after Odinga boycotted it.
