Jeweler who shot mugger suspected of manslaughter

The jeweler from Oostakker, who shot a suspect of a robbery on Saturday afternoon, is brought before an investigating judge for manslaughter.

Three shots would have been fired after two armed men had overtaken jeweler Moens. 'They were armed and they took jewelery, but they did not shoot,' said police spokesman Eva Brantegem against the Belgian newspaper.

The robber managed to get away, but eventually fell about 2 kilometers away from his motorcycle. An attempt at resuscitation was of no avail.

The jeweler did not solve his shots in the business, but on the street. Research must show whether this has been legitimate self-defense.

The identity of the victim is not yet known. The other perpetrator is still fugitive.
