Iraqi forces storm Mosul airport

Iraqi security forces on Thursday began storming the airport controlled by the Islamic State in Mosul and a nearby military base.

The attack is part of the offensive supported by the United States to get their hands on it by IS occupied western part of the city.

' Our forces have launched a major operation with the storming of the Mosul airport and Ghozlani base IS expel. We can confirm that the airport as well as is recaptured and it is a matter of short time before we have it all under control, '' said a spokesman for the anti-terrorist unit.

After ousting militants from the east of Mosul last month, Iraqi forces want to use the airport as a springboard for an attack on the heart of the second city of Iraq.

The airport and the military complex were IS-owned since June 2014. If the campaign backed by the Americans to retake Mosul very successful, then it probably means the end of the IS by self-proclaimed caliphate in Iraq.
